Continuing to eat my way through Chicago, our server from Telegraph recommended Avec and we were lucky enough to get in without a wait or a ressie, which they don’t take. They don’t like saying they’re “tapas” but their menu is designed to share a bunch of options between your party. For the two of us, we ordered two small and two large and that was plenty of food for us. The bacon wrapped chorizo stuffed dates was one of my favorite things that evening. The chorizo had a bit of a bite as an after flavor and the flavor was beautifully offset with the bacon. Ahmazing! I can’t stop thinking about this dish.
The second dish that we ordered was the spiced labneh cheese with pomegranate salsa, herb jam and flatbread. Despite being a huge cheese lover, I could’ve taken a pass on this plate. It was definitely forgettable.
Since the night before as so meat heavy, we really hit the carbs at Avec and boy am I glad we did. The hand cut pappardelle pasta with mushroom bolognese, madeira and crescenza cheese was super yummy. I was surprised that the mushroom bolognese was so creamy, but I guess that was the crescenza cheese. I’m a huge mushroom fan and I loved the mix of different ones they used in this pasta.
Between the dates and the “deluxe” focaccia with taleggio cheese, ricotta, truffle oil and fresh herbs, I can’t decide which was my favorite. This bread is seriously like crack; it’s that addictive. The ricotta and taleggio mix was beyond explanation. I’m a huge fan of ricotta in general, but adding in the taleggio brought it to a whole new level. I dream about going back to Chicago just to eat this bread and the dates. Yes they were that good.
